For Professional and Enterprise users, you may find it helpful to turn on automatic substitution to deal with dietary restrictions and food allergies:
Using Automatic Substitution:
From within “Settings” (in the upper right corner) you can toggle on/off “Substitute Ingredients.” By doing so, you will turn on/off the automatic calculation of substitute ingredients when certain dietary restrictions are present. There are two steps that you’ll need to take before this function works for you:
- In each recipe, you’ll now see a symbol which will allow you to define a substitute ingredient (eg. If an individual with a wheat / gluten allergy is present, substitute 1 slice of bread for 1 slice of gluten-free bread).
- Now that you’ve defined substitutes in all of your recipes, you’ll be able to indicate the number of individuals in each meal plan that have a specific dietary restriction. Move the slider to define the total number of individuals.
Using Recipes to accommodate dietary restrictions
By indicating which meals contain dietary restrictions within the “Create Recipe” section, you can use this information to select meals that exclude those restrictions easily. There are two ways to make sure that you keep dietary restrictions in mind:
- As you indicate the dietary restrictions included in your group, a small warning symbol will appear in the meal selection step that will allow you to avoid meals that might have a dietary conflict with those in your group.
- You can easily use the “Hide meals that contain” filters to selectively display meals that exclude meals that contain dietary restrictions you’d like to avoid.
HINT: One way to address dietary restrictions is to add both meals with and without the dietary restriction, then indicate how many individuals will eat both. For example, if you have 20 individuals in a group and 2 of them are vegetarian, you may select two meals: Spaghetti with Meatballs and Spaghetti with Vegetables. In the “# of Individuals Served” field, select “18” for Spaghetti with Meatballs and “2” for Spaghetti with Vegetables.
